Akshay Bhatia, a name familiar to many in the golf world, made a simple yet powerful gesture to remember his friend, Grayson Murray, during the Canadian Open.
Bhatia and Murray had gotten close on the golf courses. Both North Carolina natives, they spent time together on the Korn Ferry Tour and this year found themselves playing full-time on the PGA Tour. Bhatia, just 22, and Murray, 30, both had their share of wins. Murray had clinched the Sony Open in January with an electrifying 39-foot birdie putt in a three-man playoff, a moment still fresh in many minds. Bhatia, on the other hand, had claimed his second Tour victory in April at the Texas Open, securing his spot in his first Masters.
Despite the highs, life turned tragic. Last week, both golfers participated in the Charles Schwab Challenge, but while Bhatia missed the cut, Murray withdrew after 34 holes. The following day, the devastating news broke: Murray had taken his own life.
The loss left a deep impact on the golfing community. On social media, Bhatia expressed his grief, saying, “Words can’t describe how tough this is. A great friend that always supported me as I did to him. I’m gonna miss you so much man. You fought so hard.”
Returning to the course for the Canadian Open, Bhatia found his own way to honor his late friend. On his left wrist, in black marker, he wrote ‘G’ and ‘$’ – a tribute to Murray’s nickname, G-money. Bhatia shared a picture of it on Instagram before his round began, captioning it “Let’s ride today G.” Despite the emotional weight, Bhatia shot a respectable one-under 69.
In the press tent after his round, Bhatia struggled to hold back tears as he explained the significance of the markings on his wrist. “Yeah, I wrote G-money today. He’s one of my best buddies out here, grew up together. I looked up to him for a long time,” he shared, pausing to collect himself. He recounted their deep friendship, the freaky coincidences since Murray’s passing that made him feel Murray’s presence, and his commitment to playing for Murray’s memory from now on.
Reflecting on Murray’s character, Bhatia highlighted his friend’s generosity and uplifting spirit, even during his own tough times. Murray had a way of making those around him feel supported and encouraged, Bhatia noted. “He just lifted a lot of people’s spirits. Even if his weren’t up, he still wanted everyone to live a great life,” Bhatia said.
Bhatia also shared a humorous anecdote about Murray, recalling how they once split a private plane ride and Murray’s check bounced, followed by a partial payment via Zelle with an outstanding balance. It’s these little memories that seem to stay with Bhatia and remind him of the human side of his friend, beyond the golfer everyone saw.
The outpouring of support from the golf community and fans has been a silver lining in this time of mourning. Bhatia observed how Murray’s story has opened many eyes, emphasizing the importance of kindness and support in a world where struggles often go unnoticed. It’s a tragic reminder of the unseen battles many face and the critical need for compassion and connection.
Bhatia’s heartfelt tribute on his wrist was a simple yet profound way to remember and honor Grayson Murray. The bond they shared on and off the course was evident, and Bhatia’s gesture serves as a moving reminder of how deeply interconnected the golfing community truly is.
