On Tuesday, U.S. team captain Jim Furyk revealed that Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard, and Kevin Kisner will serve as his assistant captains for the upcoming Presidents Cup in Montreal.
The 2024 Presidents Cup, a biennial showdown between a 12-man U.S. team and international players from outside Europe, is set to take place from September 26-29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club.
“The three of them have a tremendous history with this event, but more importantly, they will be trusted voices in the team room and on the course for our guys,” said Furyk. All three assistants are stepping into these roles for the first time.
Stewart Cink, an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, has a notable record in the Presidents Cup, playing in four Cups and achieving a 9-7-2 record, including a flawless 4-0-0 debut in 2000. Justin Leonard, with 12 PGA Tour victories under his belt, has participated in five Presidents Cups and holds an 8-11-4 record. Kevin Kisner, known for his match play tenacity, played for the U.S. in the 2017 and 2022 Presidents Cups, compiling a 2-2-3 record.
Furyk has the option to name up to two more assistants before the competition. Meanwhile, International team captain Mike Weir previously announced Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy, and Camilo Villegas as his assistants.
The U.S. has historically dominated the Presidents Cup, boasting a 12-1-1 record, with their sole loss occurring at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 1998. The Royal Montreal Golf Club, the oldest in North America, previously hosted the Presidents Cup in 2007 and has been the venue for the Canadian Open ten times, most recently in 2014.
As the Presidents Cup approaches, all eyes will be on how these seasoned veterans guide the U.S. team in their quest for another victory.
