Exciting Ups and Downs at the 2024 PGA Championship

The 2024 PGA Championship turned out to be a roller-coaster ride with some players making impressive strides and others facing disheartening challenges.

The highlight of the event was Xander Schauffele, who finally clinched his first major championship. Known for struggling to finish strong in big tournaments, Schauffele flipped the script with a stellar final round, shooting a 6-under 65 to end the weekend at 21-under. ‘I looked at it as someone that is trying really hard and needs more experience,’ said Schauffele. His persistence and skill paid off, making this win even sweeter for him.

Another standout was Bryson DeChambeau. Despite moving to LIV Golf and being out of the traditional spotlight, he nearly won at Valhalla. With a spectacular final round of 7-under 64, DeChambeau finished just one stroke behind Schauffele, showing his quirkiness and energy are as captivating as ever.

Billy Horschel also made a strong comeback. After a tough 2023 season, he regained his confidence and tied for eighth place. This marks his best finish in years, giving hope that he’s back on track.

Robert MacIntyre, struggling with homesickness since moving to the U.S., found some form again after spending time back in Scotland. His tie for eighth place was his best U.S. major finish, showing grit and perseverance.

Viktor Hovland nearly pulled out of the tournament due to poor form but ended up finishing third. His reunion with his swing coach seems to be paying off, giving him much-needed confidence.

Justin Thomas, playing at home, had a satisfying return to form with a T-8 finish. His game showed promising signs, delighting local fans with memorable shots.

Not everyone had a great week, though. Brooks Koepka, the defending champion, had a tough time, particularly with a 3-over 74 on Saturday. Despite some good rounds, he tied for 26th place.

Another player who struggled was Wyndham Clark, the U.S. Open champion. He missed the cut, reflecting his recent struggles in tournaments.

Jon Rahm was also disappointing, missing the cut and showing clear frustration. His performance has not met expectations, raising questions about his current form.

Max Homa, who seemed to be improving in majors, couldn’t maintain his form and finished tied for 35th. However, he kept his spirits high on social media.

Collin Morikawa had a rough tournament as well. Despite playing well initially, his game fell apart, leaving him to reflect on needed improvements.

Finally, Valhalla Golf Club itself took some criticism. The soft conditions from heavy rain made the course too easy for the world’s top golfers, raising doubts about its future as a major championship venue.

The 2024 PGA Championship was filled with surprises, comebacks, and disappointing performances. While some players like Schauffele and DeChambeau shone brightly, others like Koepka and Rahm faced significant challenges. The event was a testament to the unpredictable nature of golf, making it a thrilling watch for fans.
