Lexi Thompson’s Emotional Exit from U.S. Women’s Open

Lexi Thompson’s departure from the U.S. Women’s Open was filled with emotion as she faced a tough day on the course and a tearful farewell to her fans.

In Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Lexi Thompson stood by the ninth green after what might be her last stroke—a 3-inch bogey putt in the U.S. Women’s Open. As she moved towards the scoring room, a fan shouted, ‘We’ll miss you, Lexi,’ above the applause. Unfortunately, this isn’t the exit she had hoped for, with a 78 on Thursday and four consecutive bogeys on Friday, finishing with a 75 and a 13-over-par total.

Thompson, who announced earlier in the week that she would retire from a full schedule at the age of 29, fought back tears as she reflected on her illustrious career. She made her Women’s Open debut at just 12 years old in 2007. When asked what advice she would give her younger self, she said, ‘I would say probably just enjoy life. Just be grateful for everything that you have in your life. Enjoy every experience that you get to make just being out here.’ Overcome with emotion, Thompson whispered, ‘I knew I shouldn’t have done this,’ and was handed a box of tissues.

Despite her decision to step away, Thompson plans to continue playing for the remainder of the year and aims to be part of a seventh Solheim Cup team this fall. However, her world ranking has slipped to No. 54, and her chances of being exempt for next year’s U.S. Women’s Open are uncertain unless she receives a special exemption from the USGA. Otherwise, Thompson may grind hard in her practice sessions as she prepares for a three-week stretch, including the next major at the KPMG Women’s PGA at Sahalee.

Thompson shared mixed feelings about leaving the tour, smiling as she mentioned she won’t miss the early morning wake-up calls after late finishes. ‘I’ll miss the competitiveness of just being out here and all the friendships that I’ve made along the way,’ Thompson said. ‘What I won’t miss is being able to sleep in and not having to rush to the golf course for a tee time.’ Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for the experiences and friendships she has gained throughout her career.

As the golf world bids farewell to a beloved player, fans hold on to the hope of seeing Thompson compete and perhaps achieve a strong finish this season. Her journey, marked by ups and downs, has left a lasting impression on the sport, and her legacy will be remembered.

Lexi Thompson’s tearful exit from the U.S. Women’s Open marks the end of an era. Her passion for the game and the connections she has made will be cherished by fans and fellow players alike. While she navigates her final season, the golf community will be watching and cheering her on.
