Lexi Thompson’s Emotional Farewell at U.S. Women’s Open

Lexi Thompson exited the scoring area with a heavy heart after posting a five-over 75, ensuring she missed the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club. She reluctantly agreed to speak to reporters, marking what is likely her final appearance at this event.

Having announced earlier this week that she will retire from full-time professional golf at the end of the season, Thompson was clearly emotional. ‘It wasn’t the golf that I wanted to play, obviously,’ she admitted. ‘But it was a special week, of course, with announcing what I did.’

Thompson’s journey in the U.S. Women’s Open began in 2007 when she was just 12 years old, making her the youngest player in the prestigious championship at that time. Over the years, she became a household name, winning 11 professional titles, including a major at the Dinah Shore.

However, Thompson’s career has also been marked by heartbreaking near-misses. Notably, in 2017, a four-stroke penalty during the ANA Inspiration cost her a second major title. Similar disappointments followed at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA.

Her recent announcement stunned the golf world. ‘Being out here can be a lot,’ she said through tears. ‘It can be lonely. Sorry if I get emotional. I said I wasn’t going to.’ Despite being one of the most popular players, the challenges of professional golf took a toll on her.

She emphasized the human side of being an athlete: ‘People don’t realize what we go through as professional athletes. We’re humans. Words hurt. It’s hard to overcome sometimes.’ Despite her struggles, Thompson made sure to acknowledge the unwavering support of her fans.

The crowd at Lancaster Country Club sustained their applause as she finished her round, appreciating what could be the last sight of Thompson in this tournament. ‘To see all the fans out there and just to hear their chants and ‘Go Lexis’ made me smile every single shot,’ she said. ‘Even if I kept on bogeying.’

After saying her goodbyes, Thompson reflected on her career and her family’s support. ‘I’m so blessed and grateful for the family I have,’ she remarked. As for her future, it remains uncertain, but she hinted that golf will still be a part of her life in some capacity.

Lexi Thompson’s farewell at the U.S. Women’s Open was a poignant moment, marking the end of an era for a beloved figure in women’s golf. While her future plans are still unclear, her impact on the sport and the memories she created for fans will endure.
