Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, had anything but a typical week at the PGA Championship. Despite being arrested and barely making it to his tee time on Friday, Scheffler fought hard and finished with a fantastic final round.
After signing his scorecard and nearly falling asleep at the scorer’s table, Scottie Scheffler could finally take a breath. ‘It had been that kind of week,’ said the two-time Masters champion, reflecting on the whirlwind events that unfolded.
Scheffler was arrested outside Valhalla Golf Club early Friday morning but was released from jail just over an hour before his scheduled tee time. Despite that, he posted an impressive 5-under 66 to keep his contention alive.
However, things took a turn on Saturday with a 2-over 73, marking his worst score in 266 days. But Scheffler bounced back, capping off Sunday with a stellar 6-under 65—his best final round in a major championship, finishing tied for eighth. This marked his 10th top-10 finish in his last 13 starts at majors.
‘I’m fairly tired, definitely a lot more tired than I have been finishing some other tournaments,’ Scheffler admitted. ‘But I’m proud of today, how we went out there and fought. Yesterday was frustrating, but overall, I’m proud of how I fought this week. Was fortunate to be out here competing, doing what I love.’
Scheffler’s Friday arrest added to the exhaustion. After being booked and released, he managed just a few bites of eggs and bacon before his round. ‘As somebody who’s a pretty big eater, that was a strange feeling,’ he said. ‘But I did my best to leave that behind me and compete, and the support from the fans was amazing.’
Scheffler is eager to head home to Dallas to reunite with his wife, Meredith, and their newborn son, Bennett. But he has unfinished business in Louisville. Det. Bryan Gillis alleges Scheffler’s SUV accelerated and dragged the officer, causing injuries. Gillis failed to activate his bodycam, adding to the confusion.
‘It was a big misunderstanding and a chaotic situation,’ said Scheffler. His arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, though he’s unsure if he’ll need to appear in court.
On a brighter note, Scheffler’s regular caddie, Ted Scott, was back on the bag Sunday after missing the third round for his daughter’s high school graduation. ‘I think having Teddy out is always helpful,’ Scheffler noted. ‘He’s great for me out there on course, keeping me in a good head space.’
Despite an incredibly trying week, Scottie Scheffler showcased resilience and skill at the PGA Championship. With his family waiting for him back home and a legal matter yet to clear, Scheffler remains focused on what he loves—competing in the sport that has brought him so much recognition.
