She’s 15 Years Old, and She’s Beating Golf’s Best at the U.S. Women’s Open

Asterisk Talley, a high school freshman, is making headlines not only for her golf prowess but also for handling teenage distractions effortlessly at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Talley, the youngest player in the competition, is balancing typical teenage concerns with her promising golf career. Just on Friday afternoon at Lancaster Country Club, she found herself 20 feet off the side of the 9th green, the final hole of her day, when a boy asked for her number amidst giggles from his friends. Flustered but focused, she avoided the awkward situation as autograph-seeking fans diverted her attention. Talley is now in a serious position to contend for the U.S. Women’s Open title.

Golf often sees young stars emerge, particularly at the U.S. Women’s Open. Talley, at 15 years and 106 days, stands out not just for her age but because she’s outperforming established pros like Lexi Thompson and Nelly Korda. At the tournament’s halfway point, Talley is 1-over, better than all but seven players in the field.

Her name, Asterisk, which means ‘little star’ in Greek, seems fitting. Despite being relatively new to such a high level of competition, she has displayed impressive talent. She hits her driver 275 yards on a good day and her calm demeanor on the course sets her apart. “I feel like I’m really calm on the golf course. People always tell me that, too. I don’t really get hyped on the golf course,” Talley mentions. Her ability to stay cool, whether making a birdie or a bogey, has helped her navigate the tough two days of the U.S. Women’s Open.

Talley’s journey in golf began at a very young age, but her ball-striking skills have notably improved over the last year. Her calm and methodical approach has drawn attention, and during her game, she frequently attracts crowds who are eager to see her in action. On Friday, her round concluded with fans seeking autographs and an impromptu appearance on Golf Channel.

When asked if she feels the pressure, she laughs it off, saying, “Not really. I feel like I’m kind of used to it. But at the same time, I haven’t been in one of these.” Her ability to remain unfazed is remarkable, even as more eyes turn toward her—fans, media, and yes, teenage boys too. With her T8 standing, it’s clear that Asterisk Talley is a name we’ll be hearing more of in the golf world.

As she continues to navigate both her golf career and teenage life, Asterisk Talley’s performance at the U.S. Women’s Open shows she’s not just any high school freshman but a rising star in the sport.
